5 ways to wellbeing
Our strategy for Lasting Change
Our programme incorporates 5 Ways to Wellbeing as part of our strategy to foster lasting behaviour change. These are summarised here:
• Connect
There is strong evidence that indicates that feeling close to and valued by other people is a fundamental human need and one that contributes to functioning well in the world.
It’s clear that social relationships are critical for promoting wellbeing and for acting as a buffer against mental ill health for people of all ages.
People whom have addiction issues often lose the sills required to enable them to connect or stay connected with others and the world around them. Their world can often shrink, and they become very isolated.
Our structure promotes re connecting with family and communities.
We look at ways we can re learn the skills we need to develop loving healthy relationships based in honesty and trust.
• Activity
Physical activity is good for your health, but it also has countless other benefits. Studies show that regular physical activity not only improves the quality of your daily life, but also increases your lifespan by reducing the risk of chronic illness.
We use physical activity as a means of having fun and connecting. Physical activity can make our life more enjoyable and give us more vitality. It helps keep us in shape, have improved mental health, we can manage stress better, and improves our self esteem all things that can suffer whilst caught up in addiction.
Our ethos very much looks at what we can do rather than what we can’t – we recognise that everyone can do something.
We participate in a range of activities including swimming, cycling, walking, CrossFit, badminton, football, dancing and many more. We also have links into training whereby people have opportunities to become fitness coaches.
• Notice
Learning to pay more attention to the present moment – to your own thoughts and feelings and the world around you can improve your mental wellbeing.
We practice taking notice regularly in our structured program sometimes using formal meditation and others just practicing living in the moment whether we are participating in activities like walking or cycling etc. or connecting with friends and family – being present is a real skill and will help improve how we interact with the world around us.
• Learn
Continued learning through life enhances self-esteem and encourages social interaction and a more active life.
Whilst at Elisha House you will have many opportunities to learn new things, you will most certainly have the chance to learn about yourself and others.
We work alongside many organisations that offer further education and training including some of the local colleges. Some of these organisations come to us to deliver practical courses.
Some things we have been learning about recently via workshops and such have been - Bike Workshop, Mental Health, Focus and Fly, Angling, IT, Mindfulness, Cookery, CrossFit level 1 and 2, 12 Steps, ACT PR plus so much more.
• Give
We at Elisha House have a big Ethos of giving in fact that is how we came about as an organisation – through local people who care enough to want to help make an impact on the community.
It is so much nicer to give than to take. Many people caught up in active addiction are well versed in the reverse of this concept and this can lead to lots of feelings of guilt and shame.
Whilst at Elisha House there will be many opportunities to give back whether that be doing nice things for your friends and family, volunteering some of your time, joining a community group or a mutual aid group. This naturally helps to restore peoples self esteem and instil a sense of pride.
Seeing yourself, and your happiness, linked to the wider community can be incredibly rewarding and creates connections with the people around you.
We have been getting involved with some community organisations and all our residents have an opportunity to volunteer some of their time and energy with projects like the Millennium Green, The Citadel, The Philip Green Bowling Green Academy, SAS (Seniors are Special) and Colne in Bloom – we are always looking for ways to improve our local community and this benefits both the residents and the community.
