GIVE A LITTLE LOVE AND GROW

Individuals who report a greater interest in helping others are more likely to rate themselves as happy.

Giving back to my community has been really big for me. In the past I’d lived a selfish life, but now it feels so good for me that I’m now giving instead of always taking.

We at Elisha House have a strong ethos of giving. In fact that is how we came about as an organisation – through local people who care enough to want to help make an impact on the community. It is so much nicer to give than to take. Many people caught up in active addiction are well versed in the reverse of this concept and this can lead to lots of feelings of guilt and shame.

Whilst at Elisha House there will be many opportunities to give back whether that be doing nice things for your friends and family, volunteering some of your time, joining a community group or a mutual aid group. This naturally helps to restore peoples self esteem and instil a sense of pride.

Seeing yourself, and your happiness, linked to the wider community can be incredibly rewarding and creates connections with the people around you. Connection is one of the primary ways that those suffering from addiction issues can find the strength to overcome their life challenges.

All of our residents are given the opportunity to volunteer some of their time and energy with projects like the Millennium Green, The Citadel, The Philip Green Bowling Green Academy, SAS (Seniors are Special) and Colne in Bloom – we are always looking for ways to improve our local community and this benefits both the residents and the community.
